The California State University, Dominguez Hills Foundation was incorporated in 1968 as a partner of the University to provide services and develop and enhance programs that are an integral part of the University's educational mission. CSU Dominguez Hills is a highly diverse, metropolitan university primarily serving the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. Established in 1960, CSU Dominguez Hills is one of the 23 campuses that comprise the California State University system.

Position

Provides care and education for children and their families in a child care center. Supports the Director and Teacher(s) at the center in carrying out overall program goals and objectives in a positive, open and productive manner. Shares responsibility for overall quality of children's educational experience. Assumes responsibility of a Teacher in the absence of the Teacher, and may give direction to Student Assistants, parents, community volunteers or other staff.

Responsibilities
 
  • Maintains an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child and family.
  • Promotes parent-child bonding and nurturing parent-child relationships.
  • Promotes feelings of security and trust in toddlers.
  • Greet toddlers and their parents warmly and with enthusiasm each morning.
  • Talks, sings, and reads to toddlers frequently.
  • Responds quickly in a soothing and tender manner to toddlers' cries or calls of distress.
  • Responds consistently to toddlers' needs for food and comfort.
  • Implements individualized feeding plans for children; respects individual preferences and eating styles; models manners and good nutrition.
  • Tends to children's personal hygiene needs, remaining especially attentive to them during routines such as diaper changing, cleaning, feeding, and changing soiled or wet clothes.
  • Respects toddlers' curiosity about each other; ensure that children treat each other gently.
  • Organizes each day's activities to provide children with a variety of experiences and opportunities that allow them to develop curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, and creativity, as well as a sense of self and a feeling of belonging to the group.
  • Maintains observation/anecdotal notes on all children under your care.
  • Conducts developmental screenings (Ages and Stages Questionnaire) and ongoing assessments (Desired Results Developmental Profile) of toddlers to determine motor, language, social, cognitive perceptual and emotional skills, when working in the place of the Teacher for an extended period of time (long-term).
  • Supports the Teacher(s) and Center Director in carrying out responsibility at the center level for the overall quality of the experience offered to children and families including the assurance that laws, regulations, guidelines and policies are adhered to on a daily basis.
  • Assists in the safe supervision of children engaged in learning and play activities by:  a) paying close attention to the safety of the children at all times, and b) maintaining firm, but gracious limit setting.
  • Participates in planning the overall education plan for the center and assumes responsibility for ensuring the plan in the classroom.  The plan will include Weekly Lesson Plans, written observations, program individualization for each child, and tracking each child's development, when working in the place of the Teacher for an extended period of time (long-term).
  • Maintains confidentiality of records and information of program families.
  • Supervises Student Assistants and university student (internships/fieldwork/practicums).
  • Monitor and implement therapy program and activities recommended by consultants (Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, etc.)
  • Attend staff meetings, in-services and professional seminars, training/workshops and conferences. Participate in recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and meet other aspects of professional growth.
  • Completes timely, neat, accurate documentation of screenings, assessments, individualized plans, attendance, daily health checklist, feedings, daily activity logs for parents, inventories, and other documentation as may be deemed necessary for proving quality services.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, care-giving environment, practices good personal hygiene and hand washing, and assures the well-being and safety of all of the children in that environment.
  • Maintains a positive, calm attitude and a pleasant, soothing voice, and models this attitude and voice for parents and others working or volunteering in the program.
  • Maintains a cooperative attitude of working together with other I/T teachers, the center director, the parents and volunteers in planning and implementing activities for the program/classroom.
  • Utilizes disciplinary measures appropriately as outlined in the Discipline Policies and Procedures.
  • Protects all children from physical punishment or verbal abuse by anyone in any program activity, and immediately reports any such incident to the center director or person in charge.
  • Provides for the physical safety of each child from arrival time until departure time.
  • Observes children to detect signs of illness, injury, abuse, neglect, emotional disturbance, or other special needs, and reports these signs immediately to the center director or person in charge.
  • Plans activities for children with special needs; implements individualized family service plans, behavior management plans, and/or individualized services or activities as outlined for these children.
  • Assumes responsibility for center maintenance, including orderliness and cleanliness levels that ensure proper standards of safety and sanitation. Participates in the housekeeping duties including lifting, moving furniture and equipment, dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dishwashing, etc.
  • Attends all training opportunities and staff meetings as provided and scheduled.
  • Adhere to the philosophy of the CSUDH Infant- Toddler Development Program.
  • Responsible as a Mandated Reporter of Child Abuse and Neglect. Accordingly, follows procedures for reporting known or suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Provides appropriate guidance to all children. Ensures personal rights of children are maintained at all times.
  • Performs any other tasks deemed necessary by the center director.

Requirements
 
  • Graduation from high school or GED and 24 units in Child Development/Early Childhood Education with 6 units in Infant- Toddler Studies, preferably an Associate Degree with a minimum of 24 units in Child Development/Early Childhood Education with 6 units in Infant- Toddler Studies;
  • One year of experience in an early childhood program serving infants and toddlers in a developmentally appropriate environment.

 

Must be able to do the following:

  • Communicate effectively with infants, toddlers, their parents, and other staff.
  • Provide quality, nurturing care to infants and toddlers enrolled in the program.
  • Demonstrate skills to properly address developmental needs of infants and toddlers.
  • Conduct and document developmental screenings and assessments of children.
  • Maintain effective, working relationships with children, parents, and staff.
  • Sensitive towards multi-cultural beliefs and practices.
  • Ability to relate to children of high risk families and their parents.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and submit in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Flexibility and ability to plan and supervise caregiver staff.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to assistants and parents.
  • Ability to problem solve and organize.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, and be able to communicate effectively with clients and program staff.
  • Must have knowledge of and the ability to comply with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Must be able to maintain good working relationships with other program staff.
  • Must complete health screening and TB skin test or chest x-ray prior to beginning employment.
  • Must have documented current vaccination status for measles, pertussis, and influenza
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be willing to increase basic knowledge of child development and early childhood education, as well as techniques of working with children with special needs and their families. Infant/Toddler center staff must be willing to participate in Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC) cohorts as they become available.
  • Must be able to direct the work of others, when applicable.
  • Must be dedicated to the goals and philosophy the program.
  • Must uphold program Standards of Conduct at all times.
  • Must provide certificates of completion of approved pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR training within 30 days of hire. Employee is responsible for renewing and maintaining a valid CPR/first aid certification at all times.
  • Must complete 15 hours of training on preventative health practices, as required by Health and Safety Code within 30 days of hire.
  • Employment is contingent upon meeting all job requirements and background requirements: criminal history check, education verification, acknowledgement of child abuse reporting responsibility, criminal record statement, etc. Employment is contingent upon receiving a clearance from appropriate authorities.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

Position requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking, twisting, and bending. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Simple grasping and hand manipulation required as well as reaching above below shoulder level. Requires working outdoors, as well as indoors in temperature-controlled environment with some exposure to copier and printer chemicals/fumes. Must be able to withstand exposure to noise in a daycare environment.
