Position Information

Employment at the Foundation is on an at-will basis and can be terminated by either an employee or the Foundation at any time with or without cause or advanced notice. Permanent status can neither be obtained nor granted.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefited position.

Rate of Pay $16.00 per hour / 40 hours per week 


Purpose of the position:


The Kram Lab at California State University, Dominguez Hills is hiring a full-time Laboratory Technician for at least a 2-year term position. Reporting to Professor Karin E. Kram, the successful candidate will join a small team of student researchers who are studying the evolution of bacteria. The successful candidate will participate in ongoing projects of high priority in the lab, including identifying genes that influence bacteria’s ability to adapt to high-stress conditions, using molecular techniques, next-generation sequencing, and basic bacteriology techniques. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in project development and dissemination of findings.


Essential position duties and responsibilities:

  • Conduct research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols.
  • Provide general laboratory assistance to support research activities by, for instance, preparing buffers and media, and controlling inventory of lab chemicals and reagents.
  • Use an aseptic technique to grow and count bacterial cells.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extractions, nucleic acid amplification, and next-generation sequencing library preparations.
  • Follow lab procedures for maintaining a neat, detailed lab notebook.
  • Maintain the organization of lab workspaces.
  • Maintain records of strains or other samples generated.
  • Analyze raw data and generate figures using software provided by the lab.
  • Help develop independent aspects of ongoing projects, while continuing to provide research support.


Minimum qualifications:


Education: Bachelor’s degree in science with an educational emphasis in biology, microbiology, or a related field required by date of hire.

Experience: 8 months of lab experience in microbiology and molecular biology (can be from classes).

Skills: Highly detail-oriented, must be able to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, excellent communication skills, strong organizational, time-management, and project management skills.


Other preferred qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols.
  • Knowledge of computer analysis techniques and ability to provide routine analysis and interpretation of research data.
